Decatur is a walk friendly and bike friendly community and at the recreation center our mission is Decatur Active Living! So come join our free weekly walk to get fit, maintain health, and learn about medical practices that support aging well in our lifelong community.
Walk With a Doc is social, educational, empowering, and exercise. We meet in the lobby of the Decatur Recreation Center and walk as a group (with a doc) for 2.0 to 3.0 miles outdoors. In inclement weather we can use the indoor track at the recreation center, but in our inaugural year we’ve only had to do that 3 times. We also have a supply of orange sunbrellas we use when its hot!
We invite medical professionals in the community as well as leaders of health and wellness opportunities to walk and talk with us. We have a 3 minute intro and then we head out to walk with a few cool down stretches upon our return.
Our walks seek out greenspace, sidewalks, and the PATH trails in our community, and occasionally a juice bar on our anniversary! (see photo) A few routes are through the commercial corridor but most are through neighborhoods and parks and feature water fountains. All are listed in the walking tour brochure designed by our city planning team. AND we always have a volunteer from the public safety office escort us on each walk. They are retirees trained by fire and safety to support public outings and events.
Our average attendance is 12, our average distance is 2.5, and we’ve had 28 docs join us to date! Walk with us any week, there are no sign ups, and as they say in life, half the effort is to just SHOW UP!
