According to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. Think it doesn’t do any good? Think again. Walking is low impact and easier on the joints than running. With your doctor’s permission, walking is a safe form of exercise for people with orthopedic ailments and heart conditions, and for those who are more than 20% overweight. Research has shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour of regular exercise! That quick stroll around the block seems a little more worthwhile now, doesn’t it?
Alliance is excited to join the Walk with a Doc program and offer our patients a new exercise opportunity! Join your physician and nurses each month for a thirty minute walk around Alliance – about 1.18 miles! Our physicians will also be leading conversations on health issues faced by many of our patients, including diabetes, hypertension and obesity. We hope you’ll join our medical staff the second Saturday of each month – what better way to start your weekend than on your feet making strides to help improve your heart and your general health?
No special equipment is needed; just wear a pair of comfortable shoes. You can walk alone, with friends, a partner, or family. Your personal preference!
ABOUT ALLIANCE MEDICAL MINISTRY:
Alliance Medical Ministry (“Alliance”) was founded over a decade ago to increase access to medical care for low-income, uninsured adults, the largest gap in our healthcare system. In Wake County, 126,000 adults are uninsured and lack access to affordable primary medical care. Alliance serves Wake County adult residents who fall within the healthcare gap. When patients join our practice, they are assigned to a provider’s panel and see the same provider each visit. The care provided at Alliance includes time with board-certified physicians, lab work, free or low-cost medications, eye examinations for diabetic patients, health education, chronic disease management, bilingual services, pastoral counseling and 24-hour coordination of care. Through our medical volunteers, Alliance is able to offer Cardiology, Physical Therapy, Sports Medicine, ENT, and Ophthalmology clinics to Alliance patients. We offer a Wellness Program to patients, which includes diabetes education classes, yoga, fresh food from our garden, and nutrition classes.
