I graduated from the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I received my Masters in Public Health Nutrition. For nearly 20 years I have worked in Richmond, VA for Bon Secours enjoying various and overlapping roles as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Educator. In these roles I provide both individual and group counseling for persons with a variety of health conditions and wellness goals. The population I have worked with the most extensively for the past 10 years are patients enrolled in Cardiac Rehab. I am a frequent guest speaker in the local community as well as at state and national conferences on nutrition and heart health. At home, my two children continue to challenge my nutrition know-how and creativity with their distinct food preferences. When not immersed in the world of food, I enjoy taking walks surrounded by trees and fresh air, listening to entertaining podcasts, and getting lost in a good book.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in nutrition?
I am passionate about health and I love to eat! Understanding the role between the two fascinated me.
What is your overall philosophy toward nutrition and a healthy lifestyle?
Health is of both body and mind. Obsessing or stressing about food is not healthful. At the same time, not giving any consideration to the nutrient quality of our choices is not healthful either. I strive to help individuals find a balance between eating what they need, in the amounts that they need, to achieve optimal health, while still enjoying all the sensory and social aspects of food.
What are your top 3 bits of nutrition advice?
1) Plan and plate your meals with non-starchy vegetables as the main attraction.
2) Take a few minutes each week to plan out your meals. If you have a very busy schedule, set aside time one day of the week to prep and/or batch cook.
3) Practiced the 80/20 rule of moderation. Aim to make healthful choices (in both quality and quantity) at least 80% of the time. Hold yourself accountable to this and you can occasionally enjoy splurges and indulgences without guilt or worry.
