Good morning! It’s been a few weeks, where have you guys been?! It’s me? You’re right. I was fortunate to do a couple runs with good friends in Orlando last week.
Do you walk/run/bike/etc with friends? I hope so!
Towards the end of last week, when the miles were getting longer, we entered the Disney version of the
‘pain cave’. To deal with that discomfort, a couple of us instinctively plugged into our phones. One earbud out for friendship, one earbud in for tunes. I ran into several random difficulties getting this set up on the run (tangled lines, no volume, etc) and I kind of freaked out. I mean, not reallyfreaked, but it surprised me how much I needed the music. Like, viscerally, primary need (shelter, food, water, sleep, oxygen) needed it.
Next, I promised myself that if I lived through the race I would look it up, and hopefully share with you, our television audience.
Indeed, indeed. This
article from HuffPo gets into 5 ways music improves our health, and they share the answer – it’s dopamine. Of course. Dopamine as in food, drugs, and shhhh (sex). That dopamine!
In my research I later came across a quote by Costas Karageorghis of Brunel University. Costas is a leading expert on the psychology of exercise music and describes music as a ‘legal’ PED. Okay, that makes me feel better. Is there anything better than a ‘legal’ PED? Seriously.
Do you listen to music when you are walking or doing any other type of physical activity? You should. A matter of fact we should listen when walking together.
They say music will literally increase the amount of time you walk.
That means it will increase the time you live (remember that every hour walking is two extra hours of life).
That means it will increase your odds of laughing until you cry. (well that’s certainly not going to be during this newsletter, David.)
If you are attending or leading a walk this weekend, please consider playing your tunes. I would imagine whoever gets their phone out first and turns it all the way up controls the show. Hold on. Any song but True, by Spandau Ballet. Not allowed – we’ll kick you out. The walks are really fun, laid back and a good time, but I swear to God, I’ll kick you out. Seriously, likely suspend you for maybe a year. 13 months if you do it twice. Don’t test me. I’m serious, why are you still talking about it? This could get real in a hurry.
It is funny that you brought up music this am.
Our R and D team is in the process of establishing our 2018 WWAD playlist.
Any recommendations? Are you okay if we include Something Just Like This? Lmk if that’s a problem. I think Coldplay, U2, and Bruce release extra dopamine.
David before you go, I want to thank you for clarifying the primary needs up there – wow, food, I had no idea.
