What inspired us this week?
Try this! Holy cow does Texas know how to bring the sauce. Texas Medical Association making everything possible. The TMA, and Steve Levine, also sharing this recent news on the great power of prevention. You know, I’m seeing Aricept and Namenda on a lot of medication lists in the hospital this week. It doesn’t have to be that way. Are some cases unavoidable? Of course. Can we prevent half of Alzheimer’s cases with regular walking? Surprisingly, of course. Talking and thinking about it doesn’t work. Turning off this newsletter right now and going for a walk does. You’ve always struck me as someone who likes to take action. Let’s go.
What motivated us this week?
Okay, this is long (40 mins) but I’m not sure this guy isn’t our Da Vinci? Before I read Elon Musk’s book, I thought he was a crazy, eccentric billionaire. Not afterward. When you see what he has accomplished and what he wants to do. Now I think Da Vinci. This interview at TED touches on his accomplishments, his vision, his timelines. It’s momentarily outdated as he quit his work with the WH last night.

“The first step toward getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are.” – J.P. Morgan
The act of walking is one of the simplest ways a person can be active. Regardless of fitness level, propelling one’s body forward begins a whole host of physical processes that improve cardiac and vascular function, improve mood and build endurance. And all that benefit begins with just a few, determined steps.
CaroMont Health has taken many steps—several thousand, in fact—in partnership with the National Walk With a Doc program. For the last five years, physicians and staff have led hundreds of walkers on a journey to better health. Cardiologist James Arter, MD got CaroMont’s Walk With a Doc program started by first getting the support of his fellow physicians and staff at CaroMont Heart, a comprehensive cardiac and vascular practice in Gastonia, NC. “I tell my patients that walking is an essential movement that we all require and can benefit from in regular doses,” said Dr. Arter. “Walk With a Doc is an excellent program that has aided in recovery for many of my patients. It also opens the door to allow family members of patients to participate and provides a non-intimidating atmosphere to learn about heart health and jump- start the day with a brisk walk.”
On the third Saturday of each month, a CaroMont Heart physician leads walkers through Eastridge Mall, a local shopping center that provides a weather-free, climate-controlled environment for the group. Open to all who would like to join, the program has grown in the last few years due in large part to the support of the community and the dedication of physicians.
“I don’t think people can underestimate the power of walking,” said Dr. Arter. “The key to getting started is just that, start—one step at a time.”
*It’s me again, David. While we have incredibly caring systems like CaroMont and Baylor in today’s edition. We are also fortunate to have dozens to hundreds of docs who hung a shingle doing WWAD. We often hear, “the beauty is in the simplicity”. C’mon in, the water is warm.
